About Stein Mart

Stein Mart was an American department store chain that was founded in 1908 in Greenville, Mississippi.

When the store was still functional, it was a discount man and women's store that was headquartered in Jacksonville, Florida.

The store was founded by Sam Stein, a Russian immigrant who ran the store as a general merchandise store until he died in 1932. After the death of Sam Stein, his son, Jake Stein, took over the company and redirected the focus of the company towards discounted clothing. The strategy of the company was to target regular department store customers and offering them ridiculous discounts on clothing. By the late 1970s, the company was already growing beyond Jake Stein's wildest dreams.

By the end of 1996, Stein Mart already had 123 stores. In 2013, the company operated about 260 stores and reported a profit of about 25 million dollars. Sadly, things started to spiral downward in 2017. The stock price of the company was decreasing rapidly, and the company decided to improve its financials by cutting 10% of its corporate staff and suspending the 4th quarter dividend.

Sadly, these measures were not successful and in August 2020, the company filed for chapter 1 bankruptcy, partly because of the Covid-19 Pandemic. Later, the company announced that all its stores countrywide would be closing permanently.
