About Aldi

Aldi is a discount supermarket chain owned by a German Family. It has close to10,000 stores in 20 different countries and with an estimated worth of over 40 billion Euros. It was founded in 1946 by “Karl” and his brother "Theo Albrecht". They established the chain by taking control of their mother's store which was located in Essen. In 1962, it was officially named Aldi; an abbreviation of Albrecht and Diskont. The name of the official business headquarters is Aldi Einkauf GmbH & Compagnie. Aldi officially began expansion in 1967 when the affiliate company; Audi Süd acquired a grocery chain called Hofer in Austria. Karl and Theo Albrecht were known to be very private people, till their death was announced in the year 2010 and 2014 respectively.

In the year 1960, the brothers split the company over a dispute on whether or not they should sell cigarettes. Theo wanted to start selling cigarettes in the stores, but Karl believed they shouldn't because it would attract shoplifters. Aldi corporation is divided into two corporations; Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd. Audi Nordic operates internationally in the Benelux countries, Denmark, France, Poland, Spain and Portugal. Audi Süd has branches in the United Kingdom, France, Switzerland, Australia, Hungary, China, Italy, Slovenia and Austria. They also function in the United States of America with over 1,600 stores under their name; Aldi Nord( Trader Joe), Aldi Süd(Aldi). Aldi Nord and Aldi Süd have been financially and legally separated since the year 1966. The United states of America happens to be the only nation with both versions of Aldi working together side by side, outside of its headquarters in Germany.
